Building with Bytes and Bricks

The House

Here you will find a lot of information about the house that is built in Audebo. Technical drawings, the architect's drawings and much more - as well as a video from the "Roofing Top Ceremony"

First the architect makes drawings showing the house as he/she visions it. These drawings are mainly used to "sell" the design and style of the house. Afterwards the engineers take over and make more technical drawings of the house and exact plans how it is going to be built.

Click on images to see and download the different drawings.

The "Topping Out" ceremony

The practice of "topping out" a new building can be traced back to the ancient Scandinavian religious practice of placing a tree on the top of a new building to appease the tree-dwelling spirits of their ancestors that had been displaced. The practice migrated to England with Scandinavian invaders and took root there, after this it has spread out all over the world.

It is held when the last beam is placed at the top of a building. The term may also refer to the overall completion of the building's structure, or an intermediate point, such as when the roof is dried in. A topping out ceremony is usually held to commemorate the event.
The ceremony symbolizes growth and bring luck. State and/or national flags are often raised atop the structure. It may take place during lunch time and can include a catered meal and entertainment.

In Audebo a group of German carpenter apprentices from the German partner school in Freilassing, Bavaria, joined the Danish team in the week before the topping-out ceremony of the guest house in Audebo. Even if the weather was as bad as possible with pouring rain and it was impossible to be outdoors, there was a wonderful party indoors. EUC-director Frank Tonsberg thanked all participating students and teachers for the work done and praised the good international cooperation. The Bavarian boys had brought their instruments and gave a performance of “Blassmusik” and the corresponding dance. Another German group of glazier apprentices was also present and added to the good mood. You may not think so, but the sausages were a Danish specialty – and they were good!

This 3D model of the house shows how the different drawings can be turned into an interactive model that can be used both for presentation as well as for giving instructions to the different people working on the house.

Energy for the House

One thing is the work of the electricians – without them ypu could not get light in the house. But where does the electricity come from? A good solution is to use a windmill to produce power for the house.

Environmental issues for the house

Global warming is no longer a theory - it is a fact. Therefore all buildings have to be as sustainable as possible when it comes to power and heating. This again means that insulation and building materials have to be optimized.

This video documents a meeting between the architect and the customer - in this case EUC Nordvestsjælland.

Sculpture for the house

The "Beruffachschule Berchtesgaden" is specialized in Cabinet Maker and Wood Cutting ("Holzbildhauerei" in German). The school has made a special monument to celebrate the house. If you wishe to see it then click the link here: More...
